Nükak still waiting. Documentary animation. 8:12 min. 2016.
This project was carried out with the support of GIZ, aimed at assisting displaced communities and providing insight into their social conditions (as of 2016) for external individuals and communities unfamiliar with their situation. I received invaluable guidance and advice from Professor Felipe Cabrera, whose expertise in anthropology greatly enriched the work.
This animated documentary, made in collaboration with the Nükak community of Agua Bonita in the northern Amazon rainforest, delves into their cosmological worldview and the impact of external forces, such as the Colombian armed conflict, on their spiritual and cultural practices. It explores how the Nükak perceives the cosmos and how their traditional practices are deeply interwoven with the natural landscape. When their relationship with the land is drastically disrupted, as it has been, it profoundly affects their ability to uphold traditions and maintain spiritual well-being. Through animated storytelling, the film sheds light on how these practices sustain a delicate balance between their life, territory, and spiritual beliefs. By highlighting this interconnectedness, the documentary underscores the enduring bond between the Nükak’s way of life, environment, and cosmic understanding. It also reflects on the challenges they face in preserving this harmony.
